Four low notes descending in a loop, a tempo that speeds up, and the tension rises a notch: Space Invaders burst into arcades in 1978, created by Tomohiro Nishikado for Taito! The rows of pixelated creatures slide from one edge of the screen to the other, drop a line at each turn and close in on the laser cannon, sheltered behind four shields that crumble shot after shot. No storyline softens the affair: a score counter, a mystery saucer racing along the top, and the certainty that the next wave will start out lower. Taito extended the formula with sequels such as Space Invaders Part II, but it is the little tentacled monster that prevailed, an emblem of the arcade game that became a collectible in its own right!
