Midnight strikes, a glass slipper is left behind on the palace steps and the fate of an orphan is turned upside down! Brought to the screen in 1950 by Disney studios from the tale by Charles Perrault, this great classic lifts a servant in rags out of the cinders that gave her her name. Anastasia and Drizella tear her dress to pieces under the icy gaze of Lady Tremaine, while the cat Lucifer bares his claws and the mice Jaq and Gus pinch ribbons and pearls to dress her. All it takes next is a Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo from the Fairy Godmother for a pumpkin to become a carriage and for Prince Charming to lose his head. The film's triumph got a studio back on its feet after the war had left it drained, and funded the following decade. As for the slipper, it never went back in its case: it is still making the rounds of collectors' display shelves, as intact as the sparkle of that ball night!
