The fifth Disney Animated Classic, Bambi borrows its hero from Austrian novelist Felix Salten and follows the fawn from one spring to the next, from his first wobbly steps in the clearing. The undergrowth never leaves him alone for long: Thumper the rabbit appoints himself skating teacher on the frozen pond, the skunk Flower owes her name to a misunderstanding, Faline becomes his companion, and the Great Prince of the Forest watches from afar, a father as imposing as he is distant. Then a single gunshot off screen deprives the fawn of his mother and tips the story into a gravity rare for an animated film. The forest nonetheless resumes its cycle until the birth of two little ones, and none of this melancholy tenderness has aged since 1942! A Thumper plush placed on a shelf is enough to bring it all back.
