The rumble of the Fitzgibbons' tractor, a widowed mouse who refuses to leave her son Timmy at the mercy of the plow: The Secret of NIMH concentrates all the darkness Don Bluth dared slip into an animated film in 1982. Adapted from Robert C. O'Brien's novel, the story sends Mrs. Brisby to consult the Great Owl, then down beneath the farm's rosebush. There opens an underground kingdom lit by diverted electricity, that of the rats made intelligent by the NIMH experiments, who are preparing their departure. Nicodemus and his magic quill, Justin the captain of the guard, Jenner and his murderous ambition, Jeremy the crow tangled in his strings: each one leaves a mark the credits do not erase! As for the red amulet that only ignites with courage of the heart, it remains one of the most enduring images of 1980s animation. A classic that lives on in collections, from figures of its heroes to the pages of the novel that started it all.
