A phone ringing in an almost empty house, a voice asking what her favorite horror movie is, and Casey Becker realizes too late that the conversation is a trap: Scream rewrote the rules of the slasher in 1996 under the direction of Wes Craven and the pen of Kevin Williamson! In Woodsboro, the teenagers know the genre's codes by heart, and Randy Meeks recites them out loud from the aisles of his video store while Ghostface picks them off one by one. At the center of the storm, Sidney Prescott holds firm, reluctantly backed up by the ruthless reporter Gale Weathers and police officer Dewey Riley, the eternally endearing klutz. The film mocks its viewer, then grabs him by the collar just when he thinks he has figured everything out. Few slashers dare to recite their own instruction manual out loud before trampling it, and it is this cheek that the POP figures lined up like so many suspects carry on!
