A red nose lighting up in the polar night, and here comes the most unlikely Christmas star of all! Created in 1939 by advertising copywriter Robert L. May for the Montgomery Ward stores, then propelled ten years later by Johnny Marks' song immortalized by Gene Autry, Rudolph is the young reindeer mocked for his glowing muzzle before becoming the guide of Santa's sleigh. The stop-motion animated TV special from the Rankin/Bass studio, broadcast in 1964, set the imagery that still sticks to the character: Sam the Snowman as narrator, Hermey the elf who dreams of becoming a dentist, the exuberant gold prospector Yukon Cornelius, the Abominable Snowman and that remote island where discarded toys wash up. A story about difference turned into an asset, set against a backdrop of fog, snow and jingle bells. Collector figures and illustrated books carry on the glow of the North Pole's most famous nose!
