A slender pink feline tiptoeing along, a jazz theme by Henry Mancini carried by the tenor saxophone of Plas Johnson, and that's all it takes! First seen in 1963 in the animated opening credits of Blake Edwards' film, designed by Hawley Pratt alongside Friz Freleng for the DePatie-Freleng studio, the Pink Panther quickly stepped out of Inspector Clouseau's shadow to lead his own career as a cartoon. Almost never a word: everything comes through the nonchalant walk, the sideways glance and the art of repainting the entire world pink, as in The Pink Phink, the first short in the series and winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Facing him, a little man with a big nose insists on his pot of blue paint and ends up covered in pink from head to toe. Books, long-limbed plush toys, t-shirts and figures carry this pink composure far beyond the screen, proof that a character doesn't need to speak to leave a mark!
