A top hat, a Scottish terrier and four Parisian train stations laid out on a square board: this is the stage where fortunes are made and lost! Launched by Parker Brothers in 1935 from Charles Darrow's prototype, the game descends from the Landlord's Game devised in 1903 by Elizabeth Magie to denounce land monopolization - a fine irony for the anthem of living-room capitalism. Under Hasbro's guidance, the mechanics have not changed: you buy, you build, you ruin your opponent one rent at a time, even if it means going straight to jail without passing Go. From Boulevard de Belleville to Rue de la Paix, 275 million boxes have circulated in more than eighty countries, under the gaze of Mr. Monopoly, who appeared on the Chance cards in 1936. The board comes in as many editions as there are universes to conquer, and the game continues on consoles as well as in figures, for those who have never been able to put down the dice!
