Ack ack ack! That shrill cackle announces the arrival of the little Martians with their bare brains under glass domes, born from the 1962 Topps cards before Tim Burton unleashed them on the big screen in 1996. The first contact goes wrong in the Nevada desert: a makeshift translator spits out a "we come in peace", a dove is vaporized, then the green and red rays turn Congress into fluorescent skeletons. Against the flying saucers, humanity lines up its finest incompetents: President James Dale played by Jack Nicholson, General Decker foaming with rage, Professor Donald Kessler full of admiration for his executioners, and Tom Jones in a tuxedo on a Las Vegas stage. Salvation comes down to an old Slim Whitman record whose Indian Love Call makes Martian skulls burst! POP figures with bulging skulls, comic books and novels extend this kitsch satire where bad taste becomes an art!
