All it takes is a fit of rage for the unassuming Bruce Banner to give way to a mountain of green muscle that knows only one verb, smash! Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character appeared in 1962 in The Incredible Hulk, where the physicist takes the gamma rays of his own bomb to pull young Rick Jones away from the explosion. Gray in that first issue, he turns green in the very next one, a shade that became his signature even though the gray Hulk resurfaced in the 1980s. Around him orbit Betty Ross, whose father General Thunderbolt Ross hunts the fugitive, and Jennifer Walters, Banner's lawyer cousin who became She-Hulk through a transfusion of his irradiated blood. The 1978 television series, carried by Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, planted the growling giant in the collective imagination, before his years as an Avenger raised him to superstar status. Among collectors, the legend of the green colossus is still growing!
