Olive green helmet and golden visor, Spartan John-117 became a silhouette recognizable among thousands as soon as the first Xbox launched in 2001. Created by Bungie, Halo: Combat Evolved dropped this super-soldier and the crew of the Pillar of Autumn onto Installation 04, an artificial ring built by the Forerunners. Strapped into his MJOLNIR armor and guided by Cortana, the artificial intelligence that came along with him, the Master Chief faces the armies of the Covenant there and then the parasitic threat of the Flood. Two weapons and nothing more, a shield that recharges as soon as the shooting stops: those few rules set the grammar of the console FPS! Novels, comics and a series aired from 2022 to 2024 extended the universe well beyond the game, and the Spartan's figures have since found their place in collectors' display cases.
