Camp Crystal Lake, its wooden cabins and its too-quiet lake: that is the setting where the Friday the 13th saga planted its machete in 1980, under the direction of Sean S. Cunningham! It all begins without Jason Voorhees, though, since it is his mother Pamela who avenges her boy's drowning in the first film, before the hulking figure takes over and finds his famous hockey goalie mask in the third chapter, released in 1982. The massive silhouette advancing with a relentless step became the absolute archetype of the slasher, right up to crossing paths with Freddy Krueger after a dozen films. Then there is the "ki ki ki, ma ma ma" whisper written by Harry Manfredini, enough to chill an entire theater: the merchandise devoted to the bogeyman only has to wake him up to bring the shores of the cursed lake home!
