The battle bus flies over the island, a hundred players leap into the void and the match begins: since its launch by Epic Games in 2017, Fortnite has made that jump a ritual for an entire generation! The battle royale imagined by creative director Donald Mustard is built second by second, with wood or metal walls and ramps thrown up in a hurry while the storm tightens its circle. Across the island parade silhouettes with nothing in common, Jonesy the nobody promoted to agent of the story, Peely the smiling banana, the pink bear Cuddle Team Leader, right up to the supply llamas stuffed with loot. The game quickly spilled beyond its borders, its dance moves reaching all the way into stadiums, Marvel and Star Wars placing their heroes on the map, and the giant concerts lining up Marshmello in 2019 and then Travis Scott in 2020. Once the controller is set down, the merchandise takes over to make the match last well after the final circle.
