Two ears too big for such a small elephant, and a whole big top starts sniggering! Released in 1941, the fourth Disney Animated Classic, Dumbo adapts a story by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl to follow Jumbo Junior, whom the herd has mockingly renamed. His strength lies in a paradox: the hero does not say a single word in the film, everything comes through his eyes. At his side are Timothy, the mouse in the red uniform who takes it upon himself to become his manager, the crows and their supposedly magic feather, and above all Mrs. Jumbo, whose trunk slips between the bars to "Baby Mine". Then those oversized ears unfold, the little elephant takes off, and the flaw becomes the act. From the hallucinatory parade of pink elephants to Tim Burton's 2019 take, that tenderness has never aged a day. Plush toys with enormous ears, POP figures, puzzles and mugs now keep that flight within reach.
