A carriage making its way into the Carpathians beyond the Borgo Pass, a courteous aristocrat whose mirror returns no reflection: Count Dracula makes his literary entrance in 1897, from the pen of the Irishman Bram Stoker. The novel unfolds through letters and diaries, from the clerk Jonathan Harker held at the castle to the port of Whitby, where the Demeter runs aground with its captain lashed to the helm and not a sailor left alive. Lucy Westenra becomes the count's prey, and Professor Van Helsing raises against him a small band armed with garlic cloves, crucifixes and stakes, with Mina, Doctor Seward and his patient Renfield, locked up across from the Carfax estate! Bats, creeping mist and a bite in the hollow of the neck: the modern vampire finds its definitive form here before spreading to Murnau, Bela Lugosi and Francis Ford Coppola. Reissued, redrawn as a comic book, turned into figures, the count is constantly given new coffins to haunt!
