"Stay awhile and listen": the line from the scholar Deckard Cain, last of the Horadrim, has remained the saga's doorway! Blizzard North laid out the ritual back in 1997, beneath the village of Tristram: sixteen randomly generated dungeon levels, hordes of demons and a descent into Hell to face Diablo himself. Diablo II threw open the world of Sanctuary in 2000 and sent the Amazon, the Barbarian, the Necromancer, the Paladin and the Sorceress after three demonic brothers, Diablo the lord of terror, Mephisto the lord of hatred and Baal the lord of destruction. Then, in 2023, Diablo IV brought back Lilith, Mephisto's daughter who had founded this world with the angel Inarius to escape the eternal war between Heaven and Hell. Comic books and novels now extend the chronicle of Sanctuary, and the loot gets picked up there until dawn, just like in the dungeons of Tristram!
