Two snouts poking out of a tree trunk, a stash of acorns to defend and a guard dog made to look foolish: Chip and Dale showed up in 1943 in the short film Private Pluto, before inheriting a name four years later along with their very own punching bag, Donald Duck! Contrary to popular belief, they are not squirrels but chipmunks, named Chip and Dale in English as a nod to the master cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. With his small black nose and clenched teeth, Chip remains the brains of the operation, while Dale's big red nose and tousled tuft of hair give away the maker of disasters. In 1989, the two chipmunks traded the tree branch for investigations in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, backed up by Gadget, Monterey Jack and Zipper, before returning in a film on Disney+ in 2022. Today, their thieving little faces turn up even in collections, proof that the best nut thieves always end up walking away with the loot!
