Pouring rain, Japanese neon signs and cars gliding above a saturated Los Angeles: Blade Runner is first and foremost an atmosphere, captured in 1982 by Ridley Scott from Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? In it, Rick Deckard hunts down runaway Nexus-6 replicants, beings manufactured by the Tyrell Corporation whose humanity can only be guessed at through the Voight-Kampff test. Opposite Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer gives Roy Batty his farewell on a rain-soaked rooftop, a few words about tears lost in the rain that still haunt science fiction! Vangelis' synthesizers, Gaff's origami unicorn, then the orange desert of Blade Runner 2049, where Denis Villeneuve handed the investigation to Officer K in 2017, extend that sense of vertigo. The investigation continues in the novels and comics, without ever settling the doubt: who is really the more human, Deckard or his prey?
