A spit curl on her forehead, a garter in plain sight and that "Boop-oop-a-doop" sung into the microphone: Betty Boop is recognizable in a second! Drawn by Grim Natwick for Max Fleischer, she appeared in 1930 in Dizzy Dishes, a Talkartoon where she still wore poodle ears, before stealing the spotlight from Bimbo the dog and Koko the Clown. Her black-and-white world follows its own rules: the walls breathe, the chairs waddle, objects start talking and jazz sets the pace, with Cab Calloway rotoscoped as a ghost for Minnie the Moocher. Mae Questel gave her a voice from 1931, and that insolence eventually caused trouble: the Hays Code lengthened her dress in 1934. The collections carry on this elastic cartoon where nothing stays in place, and all it takes is one spit curl to bring back the Boop-oop-a-doop!
