Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara give adult lives to paper dolls. From that observation came Barbie, aka Barbara Millicent Roberts, introduced by Mattel in 1959 at the New York toy fair, with a black and white zebra-striped swimsuit, large sunglasses and a blonde or brunette ponytail. She has since held more than two hundred jobs and was already wearing the Miss Astronaut suit in 1965, four years before the first steps on the Moon! Ken Carson joined her in 1961, the cardboard dream house unfolded in 1962, and her friend Midge and then her younger sister Skipper completed the neighborhood. Greta Gerwig brought that pink to the screen, with a film led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling that dominated the worldwide box office in 2023. Mattel has sold more than a billion dolls, and the dream house has found annexes on collectors' shelves, where the 1959 invitation lives on: choose a life and try it out.
