A placid bear with his backpack and a loudmouthed red bird perched inside it: the duo created by Rare in 1998 on Nintendo 64 hasn't aged a day! Banjo and Kazooie leave Spiral Mountain to climb through the lair of Gruntilda, the green witch who speaks in rhyme and who has kidnapped Tooty, the bear's little sister, to steal her beauty. The climb is paid for in Jiggies and musical notes, wrested from the swamps of Bubblegloop, the snows of Freezeezy Peak and the haunted Mad Monster Mansion, with lessons from Bottles the mole and transformations from the shaman Mumbo Jumbo. Grant Kirkhope's melodies switch instruments depending on the room you walk through, a tiny detail that became a signature. Banjo-Tooie extended the adventure in 2000, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brought the duo back into the ring in 2019. The bear and his breegull now make themselves at home on shelves, between figures and pages to turn, so the climb never has to stop!
